Author quote from
WESTERN DESERT, by PJ Sharon:
Maybe that was the
point all along. Just because I had the power to heal, it didn’t mean I could
control other people’s destinies—especially since I hadn’t even figured out my
own.
This quote from my
protagonist Lily in WESTERN DESERT, sums up her dilemma throughout this second book
in the dystopian trilogy, the Chronicles
of Lily Carmichael. A genetically enhanced teen with the power of healing
in her touch, she struggles with her desire to heal others and her need to keep
her gift secret from the Industry, a rogue government subsidiary that would
like nothing better than to capture her and exploit her abilities. To make
matters worse, Lily is driven by her promise to save her brother, Zeph. Not
only from the Industry, but from himself and his dangerous ability to take life
with just a touch. Lily is repeatedly reminded of her limitations throughout
the story and is often frustrated with her own lack of control and the
consequences of her impulsive and sometimes reckless choices. Will she ever
come to realize that people have to want
to be healed? And that imposing her will on others makes her no different from
the people she is trying so desperately to escape? Will she overcome her innate
refusal to take life when necessary to survive? Or will she risk the people
closest to her in order to stand by her principles?
