Star Cruise: Marooned

By

Veronica Scott

Meg Antille works long hours on the charter cruise ship Far Horizon so she can send credits home to her family. Working hard to earn a promotion to a better post (and better pay), Meg has no time for romance.

Former Special Forces soldier Red Thomsill only took the berth on the Far Horizon in hopes of getting to know Meg better, but so far she’s kept him at a polite distance. A scheduled stopover on the idyllic beach of a nature preserve planet may be his last chance to impress the girl.

But when one of the passengers is attacked by a wild animal it becomes clear that conditions on the lushly forested Dantaralon aren’t as advertised – the ranger station is deserted, the defensive perimeter is down…and then the Far Horizon’s shuttle abruptly leaves without any of them.

Marooned on the dangerous outback world, romance is the least of their concerns, and yet Meg and Red cannot help being drawn to each other once they see how well they work together. But can they survive long enough to see their romance through? Or will the wild alien planet defeat them, ending their romance and their lives before anything can really begin?

Excerpt:

Excerpt from Star Cruise: Marooned by Veronica Scott

What in the seven hells had Drewson been thinking, taking off without them?
The ranger station was ominously quiet. The storm shutters were latched and the usually immaculate landscaping had become overgrown, weeds running riot, untrimmed vines establishing a foothold on the ornamental fence, and even scaling one wall.
“How long do you guess the rangers have been gone?” Meg said, eyeing the building. She glanced at the living quarters to the left, noticing the same general run down air. The three small houses were tightly sealed, as if hunched against a coming storm.
“The forest grows fast,” Red said. “Probably not more than a few months. I wonder why we weren’t warned, though.”
“Warned?” Callina Bettis picked up on his remark. “Are we in some kind of danger?”
Red and Meg exchanged glances. “He means we should have been notified there wouldn’t be any immediate help onsite,” Meg said, forcing herself to speak the lie calmly. “In case of an emergency, like the unfortunate bite Sharmali suffered.”
Setting the injured woman on a picnic table, Red went to the front door of the station, Meg on his heels. She tried activating the portal to no avail, punching the tabs hard. “You think the last person out would have left it set to open, general access, in case anyone needed help the way we do.” She thumped her fist on the door.
“Unless the staff didn’t expect anyone to be here,” Red said. “Are you sure there’s not something you forgot to tell me?”

Hearts Akilter

Love, vengeance, attempted murder, and a bomb...No reason to panic.

When a medical robot insists he's having a heart attack, Marlee Evans, a pragmatic maintenance technician, has every reason to panic. There's a bomb inside him.  Since Marlee can't risk the bomber discovering she's found the device, her only option is to kidnap Deacon Black, an unflappable bomb expert, and secretly convince him to disarm it.  Things go slightly awry when Deacon sets a trap for someone who is trying to kill him, and inadvertently captures Marlee instead.  Instantly intrigued by her refreshingly forthright and gutsy attitude, he's smitten.  Unfortunately for Deacon, Marlee recently hardened her heart and swore off men, especially handsome ones with boy-next-door grins.  But as Marlee and Deacon attempt to identify and prevent the bomber from detonating the device, they discover that love may be the most explosive force of all.

HEARTS AKILTER
By Catherine E. McLean @ 2015
The bomb. Right. Dismantle the bomb. In this lift? No, that was insane. “Marlene, if the bomb goes off accidentally—”

“It’ll blow the station to kingdom come?”

He nodded.

     “Not to worry.”
She said that with such nonchalance that he found himself speechless. He cleared his throat. “Why not? Did you snatch the portable Bomb Disposal Unit, too?”
“Better.”
 “What’s better than a BDU?”

“Garbage incinerators.”

“What?” He glanced out into the darkness beyond the lift.
Giant machinery stood silhouetted and veiled in shadows. “Where are we?”
“Deck forty-three, Ring D zero three. Relax. Don’t panic.  They once accidentally incinerated a torpedo in number four, over yonder.”
She pointed to the left. “Nobody heard or felt it explode, and there wasn’t even a drail’s worth of damage done to the incinerator, or anything else.”
            “I don’t believe you.”

“It happened three years ago. I was there, a deck above.
Never mind.”
Henry manipulated his finger appendage, grabbing and briefly tugging the shirt sleeve of Deacon’s good arm. “Marlee would never lie about anything so important.”

“Does she lie about unimportant things?” He instantly regretted his caustic remark.
“I do not know.” Henry spun sideways, facing Marlee. “Do you lie about unimportant things, Marlee?”
“I have been known to tell a white lie now and then to spare someone’s feelings, but on the whole—” She looked away from Henry.
As her blacker than black eyes met his gaze, Deacon felt pinned to the wall.

Mating Rituals is an off world romantic suspense.

Blurb for "Mating Rituals"

With rock-hard fortitude, Marohka Taunton battles to maintain her position as top mineralogist and refuses to see why she should marry even if the law requires she take a mate. Fighting her attraction for Stihl Fermesium, she struggles to save her father's company.

Stihl, determined to win her as his mate, is faced with the commission deal of a lifetime and needs the money to save his family land. He wrestles with her emotional resistance and discovers someone other than Marohka is unhappy about their union. In fact, they want to separate them in the most basic of ways, death.

Excerpt:

“Cyd, we have a problem,” Stihl said into his ECD. With Marohka in his arms, he dropped into the hard seat of the IPT car.

“What happened? Marohka skipped out on you again?” Cyd answered with a laugh.

“No.” Stihl shook with fear. “I think she’s been poisoned.”

He stroked her hair where she lay on his lap. “Her tongue has several green spots like Dusty’s. Call Harrigun. Get him over there right away with the antidote.”

“Right, how long until you arrive?”

“We’re on our way. We’ll be there in a few itons,” Stihl grumbled, “if this car would travel a little faster.”

“Harrigun will be here by the time you arrive,” Cyd ended.

A cold sweat dripped down Stihl’s back. He debated whether to take her to a medical facility. He didn’t believe they’d be able to diagnose her problem. When his dog, Dusty, got sick, they figured out what happened after he died. Better prepared this time, Stihl felt confident he could arrange the right kind of help.

A warning? Or did someone miss the mark, and he should be the one out cold?

He scanned Marohka, and a strange emotion bloomed inside him and poured through his cells. He wanted to identify the gut-wrenching pain.

Anger.

Yes, but it didn’t explain the ache around his heart. Outside of beating someone senseless in some barroom brawl or fighting with his father, Stihl rarely experienced this type of deep twisting reaction. And he disliked the feeling.

Why would someone wanted to hurt her?

He knotted his hands.

Protective.

Maybe, a part of what he was feeling was that he should’ve shielded her from any type of attack. The fear, which had consumed him when she’d fainted in his arms, still rumbled through his nerves like sharp knives. He’d admit blending with Marohka offered a certain level of excitement. And she might prove to be useful for his new adventure, but any deeper feelings like fear or grief were unrealistic.

A means to an end, a useful partner, a possession, nothing more could exist. Nothing more was feasible. He lacked the time for the love and commitment routine.

The twitch of her hand against his forced him to question his callous thoughts. A beautiful person with feeling and desires he’d only just begun to understand, she’d won his respect. Devoted, she’d fought to protect her family and also to maintain her career.

As his responsibility, he sought to secure her safety and convince her, their marriage could work. But . . .

Each book has been released separately to 5-star reviews.  In addition, this set includes the Star Trails Compendium with terms, definitions, and detailed background information on the stories' planetary setting.  Its physicist author has made science an inherent part of this series which the Compendium exploits in a special section for parents and educators with ready-made discussion ideas and lessons plans designed to stimulate interest in science and engineering.

Whether you're simply a hard science fiction fan or a science teacher looking for a ready-made extra credit package, this series is for you!  So what are you waiting for?  Blast off now with the Brightstar family for a gripping interstellar ride across the galaxy!

SERIES OVERVIEW
Planetary engineers known as terralogists have the technology and know-how to transform planets from barren wastes to prosperous worlds.  Laren Brightstar's reputation in this field is such he can name his own price.  But refusing to work for devious and vengeful despot, Augustus Troy, has an even higher price.
Relocating to distant Cyraria is supposed to get Laren as well as his family out of harm's way.  Instead the winds of fate place him directly in his enemy's crosshairs, the entire Brightstar family suffering the consequences as Laren repeatedly refuses Troy's brutal attempts to coerce him into his employ.

Teenage daughter, Creena, is missing, her accidental jettison to parts unknown during the move suspected to be an abduction.  Efforts to find her strengthen Troy's grip even further, the family forced to live in a primitive shelter on a planet with lethal climatic extremes.  Laren's technological savvy could save them for a while but ultimately he's imprisoned, thrusting teenage Dirck into responsibilities for which he's woefully unprepared.  Creena winds up on a primitive planet from which escape is unlikely, even as she's being pursued by evil forces she doesn't understand.

Being reunited motivates each family member's every move, a goal thwarted at every turn as each struggles to survive.  Cyraria has several secrets, however, which the Brightstar's youngest member, Deven, discovers, eventually turning the planet from antagonist to benefactor as they face the final challenge to their very existence from hostile forces of which Troy is but another pawn.
