Good Keywords for Author SEO

Authors need good keywords for blog posts, books, marketing, even writing newsletters. SEO, which means Search Engine Optimization, is all about writing and content searchable by search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc. After all, if no one can find you, what good will it do to write material anyway? To be found, authors need good keywords and good SEO.

Included in this post is a shot of the Yoast SEO Wordpress plugin used on my personal site. I use this plugin on each post. This is one I used for a post called How to Leave A Review (which I'll mention again below).

On my personal site, in each post, I use the following:

A focus keyword.

For ex, a phrase that includes the genre, book or character name, or a descriptive phrase. On one of my posts, titled "How to Leave a Review" I used "leave a review" and repeated it in the title, url, H2 heading, and the body. By the time I'd finished it was there 13 times total. Anyone searching for info on how to leave one, when to leave one, where to leave one, etc. would be likely to find it.

Slug

This is generally the same as above. The slug is what the words at the end of the url are called. Mine was leave-a-review (after the kayelleallen.com/ ) Making it the same as the focus word strengthens the SEO.

Meta Title / Meta Description

I use Wordpress, and have a plugin called Yoast SEO that allows me to choose the meta title and description. I don't have that on Blogger. When you Google something, you know the words in bold that come up and show you a title? That's the meta title. The words beneath it are the meta description. If you can't specify, then Google (and other search engines) pick up the post title and about 150 characters of the first paragraph.

Title and hashtags

I try to match the focus keyword and then research the best hashtags on https://ritetag.com/

H2 Header

Match your focus keyword somewhere on the page in an H2 heading.

Video

Because it owns YouTube, Google loves videos from there. Use the focus word in the description and/or header of that.

Call to action

Generally, I plan my call to action first, and then write the post to showcase that. I want people to leave a review of my book, so I pulled it in as examples in the entire post about how to leave a review. Then I asked if they had left one no matter who's or where, to share the link. It got a ton of views, but no comments. Typically, I get far more views than comments, so it wasn't a surprise.

Image alt tags

On my personal site, I highlight the title of the post and paste that into the alt tag line of each image in the post.

Featured Image

In Blogger, you usually see the first image when you post a url on Facebook or Twitter. With Wordpress, you can pick the exact image you want, even if it isn't in your actual post. When the meta title and description go up on Twitter, Facebook, Google, etc., that is theimage that goes with it.

Other minor things to watch:

Use one category only. This is like the folder in the filing cabinet. It can only go in one at a time. Exception: On RLFblog, I use two categories when the author does an interview. One for the type of interview, and one for the type of book. This lets readers search for both.

Use keywords that are genre specific, book specific, topic oriented. Don't change wording and spelling on these. Keep them simple so readers can easily click the tag and find everything in the topic. For ex, don't use the word book plus the word books. One or the other.

That's pretty much what I do. It's working very well.

If you use Wordpress, get the Yoast SEO for Wordpress plugin. It will teach you these very things. If you do them, your article is going to be much more findable by search engines. Use the checklist, and write good content that contains information people want to find. It's that simple.

Fashion for the @ECWC_Seattle_WA Event for #Authors #TinaTidings

If you haven't been following along on my fashion adventure, make sure to scroll down and see the other outfits I'm looking at wear at the ECWC conference in Seattle.

The quest with these post, is to find an outfit that not only I like but others think I look good in. So feel free to leave a comment.

Today, I'm working with my cream colored hat so all the clothes will hopefully accent the hat.

If you saw yesterday post you will notice that I also tried this outfit with my black hat. Today, I'm pairing the shirt with cream color pants and hat.

Now, I'm switching color scheme and going with blue pants, a purple shell with a multicolor jacket.

Also, I wanted to try outfit that included a dress.

A #Romance #Author Making Fashion Choices #TinaTidings

Each time an author heads off to conference one of the things she needs to decide is what to wear.

My first choice to make was what hats to wear.  I've been sharing pictures of them over the last week or two.

Now, I need to put the outfits together.

Yesterday, I matched my clothes with my red hat. Now, we are moving on to my black hat.

This sparkle top is paired with cream colored pants and my black hat. Or do you like it better with black pants.

Now for our next selection, we have a black hat with turquoise sweat and black pants

Last but not least we have black hat, black pants and animal print shirt.

The pounding came closer, harder, hurting her ear as she lay against the earth.

Something was running towards her. She could smell its fear. A human.

“Who are you?” The woman began to kick and scratch at Layla’s hands.

“Doo…not…fee-arrh…meee...” Her vocal cords stilted the strange words even to her ears, with a rasping halt that sounded too deep to be human. The unused muscles in her throat needed exercise.

When the woman screamed and kicked her in the face, the stiletto heel lodged in Layla’s eye.

Pulling the stiletto out of her eye, Layla was at once regretful. She would have to concentrate on a more suitable pitch. She had no wish to frighten the golden lady who would soon begin her journey to the underworld of paradise.

She crawled over the woman, rubbing the dark, glittering stones on her garment, which left most of her body bare. The stones were like stars in the night, shimmering as the woman struggled.

The golden lady looked into the eye she’d ruptured with her shoe, her own blue eyes widening as the fissure closed. She stopped struggling and started keening softly.

“Nubiti…” The low rumble Layla emitted was meant to sooth, but she could not temper the power behind it. Unable to find calming words, she shook her head as the woman’s eyes rolled.

Gently, Layla touched the strange, blonde spikes on Nubiti’s head.

“Please, don’t hurt me.”

“Anubis waits for you.” Her tone now held the gentleness of a human’s, and she smiled. The triumph was brief as she felt the sting of envy where her heart had once resided, filled with life. Nubiti would meet the god who was the scout of all souls.

Long ago, she had been denied her meeting with Anubis, but she would not think of that now.

She turned her attention to the woman’s skin. Her hand followed her lips to Nubiti’s translucent neck. Veins glistened in the smooth white column as the finest lapis lazuli. Reverently, she sank her teeth into the flesh, savoring her first drink after such a long slumber.

Inside the dump truck’s hopper, Kathryn screamed as the car sped toward them. “Farlaise. Straight ahead. We’re sitting ducks.”

Luke gritted his teeth and opened the throttle. The dump truck sped up. Solid, but not superfast, it trundled along the road. A brick outhouse came to mind as he headed directly for Farlaise’s car. This was one game of chicken Luke meant to win. Even if he took a bullet, he’d hold his course and keep Kathryn safe. “So, junior leaguer, how’s your pitching?”

She tried for a smile, but it turned into a grimace. “I had one of the team’s lowest earned run averages.”

Luke kept the throttle open wide. The chugging of the engine grew louder, but he’d told her the dump truck had a top speed of less than thirty miles an hour. The wind made it feel faster.

He took a deep breath and yelled, “Hooah. Balls-to-the-wall time. Our dump truck will pulverize their front end. When you’re near enough, lob one of your Molotov things in their direction. Anything to keep them off-balance since I might as well have a target on my chest sitting up here.”

She barely heard him over the engine noise. Adrenaline shot through her. She shivered with a mix of exhilaration, panic, and determination. Protecting Luke mattered more than her safety. Her fear level rose right along with her blood pressure. She could hear her heart race, but she’d keep the driver distracted. No way would she let Farlaise and his henchman hurt Luke.

Kathryn peered out the hopper. The henchman had his gun pointed directly at Luke. No way, buster.

They’d called and said they were in, so it didn’t take all that long to tell her yes or no, did it? He kept stretching his legs out ahead of him then bringing them back, not wanting to trip anyone as they were called for their appointment. He’d been there at least an hour waiting, jumping at every noise. He’d been sure the nurse was about to give him something for his nerves when he felt someone nudge his foot. He scooted his feet back, letting whoever it was pass by on their way to their appointment.

“Good quiz in Cosmo?” Avery’s voice came from behind the glossy pages.

He lifted his gaze in record time. “Who cares?” He tossed the magazine on the empty chair beside him.

She read the cover. “Rating your lover in twelve easy questions.”

“Avery?”

“What?” She’d been reaching for the magazine.

“I want to know.”

“I haven’t taken the quiz yet.” She giggled as he batted her hand away. “You’re absolutely crazy.”

He glanced around the almost deserted waiting room before he pulled her down to sit on his lap. “I want to know if we’re going to have a baby.” His arm wrapped around her waist, his fingers sliding beneath the back of her shirt, rubbing the soft skin at the small of her back. “I need to know.”

“You need to know, huh?”

His eyes locked on hers. “Come on, Aves. Am I going to be a daddy?”

She took one of his hands and moved it around, resting it on her abdomen. She bit her lip for a moment before breaking out into the most beautiful smile he’d ever seen. “I think Daddy’s crazy, don’t you, baby?”

Josh’s jaw dropped, his mind going absolutely blank as he tried to comprehend her words. She was kidding, she wasn’t kidding. She didn’t look like she was kidding. That smile on her face, the way her eyes were shining as she waited for his reaction. “Oh my…oh my God…”

“So I guess I was right.”

“Let’s take you home,” he said suddenly, his hand tightening over hers.

“Why?”

He leaned in close to her. “Because I want to talk to the baby and then I want to make love to his beautiful mommy.” He stared into her eyes. “All right with you?”

She blushed as she slid off his lap. “More than all right with me.”
